Recién hoy la diseñadora y profesora de la Universidad de Nuevo Mexico, Maggie Macnab publicó un articulo sobre la Conferencia de ICOGRADA que tuvo lugar en la Habana la pasada semana, un texto que nos cuenta la experiencia de esta diseñadora al interactuar con una realidad tan diferente a la de Estados Unidos, y todo esto en el entorno de la conferencia de diseño.

Hola, mi nombre es Claudio Sotolongo, soy diseñador gráfico, me gradué en la promoción del 2006 del Instituto Superior de Diseño de la Habana, Cuba y desde ese momento doy clase de Historia del Diseño en el mismo. He asistido a varios cursos impartidos en Cuba sobre arte y sobre diseño entre ellos, en el 2005 el curso Arte Contemporáneo Español. Prof. Manuel García. Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes. Ciudad de La Habana.

Entre mis proyectos más importantes está el diseño integral en el año 2006 de la multimedia Carteles son… carteles del ICAIC, en el año 2004 de la publicación PIXEL para la Facultad de Artes y Letras de la Universidad de La Habana y en el año 2004 el rediseño del identificador y el correspondiente Manual de Identidad para el Festival Internacional del Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano, Ciudad de la Habana. He participado en exposiciones colectivas y festivales como el Memefest 2006 International Festival of Radical Communication. Category Visual Arts. En el año 2004 en la exhibición Digitalis Ethno Techno: An Exhibition of Digital Print, Vancouver, Canadá.

He realizado carteles para el ICAIC, entre ellos: Homenaje Alfred Hitchcock, Poética Gráfica Insular, Son para un sonero y Muestra de Cine Holandés 2005. En el año 2005 obtuve el 1er premio en el concurso de carteles Homenaje a Rostgaard, Instituto Superior de Diseño Industrial en ese mismo año el Premio de Cartel, 45 Aniversario Cinemateca de Cuba, Ciudad de la Habana, y en el año 2004 el 3er Premio en el Sexto Salón de Arte Digital. Hi, my name is Claudio Sotolongo, I am a graphic designer, and I graduated from the Instituto Superior de Diseño in Havana, Cuba in the year 2006. Since that I teach Graphic Design History in that school. I have attended to several lectures and courses on art history and graphic design, among them the course Spanish Contemporary Art, by the professor Manuel García, at the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Ciudad de La Habana.

Among my most important projects I can point the full design in the year 2006 of the multimedia Carteles son… carteles del ICAIC, in the year 2004 the experimental magazine Pixel of the Faculty of Art History at the University of Havana, also in the year 2004 the re-design of the brand of the Festival Internacional del Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano. I hhave participated in exhibitions and festivals as the Memefest 2006 International Festival of Radical Communication. Category Visual Arts. In the year 2004 in Digitalis Ethno Techno: An Exhibition of Digital Print, Vancouver, Canadá.

I have worked for the ICAIC, designing brochures, invitations and posters. Some of those are: Homenaje Alfred Hitchcock, Poética Gráfica Insular, Son para un sonero y Muestra de Cine Holandés. In the year 2005 I got the 1 prize in the posters competition Homenaje a Rostgaard, held at the Instituto Superior de Diseño Industrial - now Instituto Superior de Diseño, in the same year I won the jury award at the Poster Competition for the 45 Aniversario Cinemateca de Cuba, and in the year 2004 I receive the 3th prize in the Sexto Salón de Arte Digital. sponsored by the Centro Cultural Pablo de la Torriente Brau.

La experiencia de un congreso mundial de diseño es única, intercambiar experiencias, hacer contactos o simplemente asistir a las presentaciones es muy gratificante. El congreso que recien termina en la Habana trajo exposiciones, conferencias y presentaciones de algunos de los más importantes diseñadores del siglo XX y del XXI, entre ellos Paula Scher, Shigeo Fukuda o Alejandro Magallanes.
Se generaron debates relacionados a la cultura, la responsabilidad social, el intercambio cultural, asi como la educación del diseño y la creación de redes de trabajo. 
En esa misma línea he abierto este blog, para crear proyectos conjuntos ”web-based” con mis estudiantes de comunicación visual, interambiar experiencias a través de la red, o simplemente conocer diseñadores, estudiantes y personas interesadas en el diseño gráfico

The experience of a world congress of design is unique, exchanging experiences, making contacts o just attending to the presentations has been a great experience. The congress that ended two days ago in Havana was surrounded by exhibitions, lectures and presentations, it allow many people, not only cubans, to interact with designers as Paula Scher, Shigeo Fukuda or Alejandro Magallanes.
Debates turn around culture, social responsability, cultural exchange, and design education as well as the creation of networks of designers.
In an attend to follow this ideas I have come up with this blog, to create web-based projects with my students of visual comunication, exchange experiences using the Internet o just meet new people involve in the design issues.
